How to Approach Change: 5 Simple Habits for Success

how to navigate change with a clear plan and mindset

Change is a constant in life and in business, yet it is often met with hesitation, resistance, and a focus on what we might lose. Whether it’s a shift in strategy, a new role, or an unexpected disruption, our instinct is often to assess the risk rather than the opportunity.

But what if we approached change differently?

What if, instead of asking “What’s at risk?”, we asked, “What’s possible?”

That shift in perspective changes everything.

Over the years, Gary Dansie and I have worked with individuals and organizations navigating change, and we’ve consistently seen the same pattern: when people focus on loss, they resist; when they see a path forward, they engage. The difference is not the change itself, but how it is understood.

This led us to a simple idea: change doesn’t have to be overwhelming. It can be intentional.

An intentional approach to change isn’t about having all the answers upfront. It’s about creating clarity, building momentum, and learning as you go. In our work, we’ve found that five simple habits help make that shift:

  • Vision — a clear picture of where you’re going and why it matters
  • Iteration — taking small steps and learning from each one
  • Innovation — staying open to new ideas and better ways forward
  • Planning — creating enough structure to move with purpose
  • Celebration — recognizing progress to build momentum

Individually, these habits are simple. Practiced together, they reshape how we experience change. What once feels uncertain and disruptive can begin to feel purposeful and even energizing.

Change itself is unavoidable. What’s not fixed is how we respond to it. With the right mindset and habits, we can move from resisting change to engaging with it—and ultimately benefiting from it.

So perhaps the better question isn’t whether change is happening, but how we choose to meet it.

How will you approach the change in front of you?
